They’re real! (and not just in cartoons)

We can’t be the only ones that thought oasis’s like this were just in cartoons right?!? No seriously, we had actually seen an oasis or two a few years ago in the Serengeti but nothing like this. This was like a little hidden world.

Welcome to Terjit, a desert oasis.

The road was long (and full of camels) through the desert leaving Nouakchott towards Terjit but not to worry – when you are in Mauritania you are never too far from a tea break! Although I don’t drink tea I thoroughly enjoyed hopping out of our very packed van to spread out a little and relax!

We made it to our campground just in time to take a short hike through the oasis and up the canyon wall for a fantastic view of the sunset! The oasis was just unbelievable!

I mean – does this even look real?!?!!!! And the water was SO fresh and cool.

You know I have to hang from something… lol

it was calling my name!

After sunset we made our way back down to the campsite for a group dinner of rice, veggies and mystery meat! Please don’t say camel, please don’t say camel! The tents were made from just wood posts and fabric but there were two reasonably comfortable mats to place our sleeping bags on and a rug to keep us out of the sand (our bags really). The campsite included a couple squatty potty stalls, a couple showers and even a micro-sized pool!

Nighty Night!

…and then we woke in the morning to the most beautiful sight right atop the hill behind our tents.

This hut was atop the hill, used for viewpoint.

I woke first, got my coffee and climbed up, saw this cutie making his owan coffee from the top!

View of the village within the Oasis

Me! Checking out that sunrise and pink sky!

As always, I really enjoyed reliving the fun with you! Stay tuned for more adventures by the Krajicek’s!
